Ilmenau: Goethe's Thuringian Retreat, Technische Universitaet Campus, and the Glass Industry Town on the Northern Thuringian Forest Edge
Ilmenau has about 27,100 residents and lies at the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest in Thueringen. Goethe visited repeatedly during his years in Weimar and wrote the poem "Wandrers Nachtlied" on the Kickelhahn hill above the town. The Technische Universitaet Ilmenau is a technical university with a focus on engineering and information technology. Glass and porcelain production were historical economic pillars.
Erfurt is about 40 kilometres north. Suhl lies roughly 25 kilometres south across the Thuringian Forest ridge. Arnstadt is around 20 kilometres northeast. The Kickelhahn (861 metres) provides forest hiking above the town. The Rennsteig long-distance trail passes through the mountains to the south. Ilmenau's population has declined since reunification as young people moved west.
