Muehlhausen has a population around 38,100 and lies in northwestern Thuringia, between the Hainich National Park and the Eichsfeld hills. The radical reformer Thomas Muentzer led the Peasants' War from Muehlhausen in 1524-1525, establishing a short-lived theocratic council before his capture and execution.
