Heidecksburg, a Baroque palace perched on the hill above the town, was the seat of the Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt principality until 1918. Friedrich Schiller visited Rudolstadt in the 1780s, where he first met Goethe at a social gathering. The annual Tanz-und-Folkfest draws folk music performers from across Europe.
