Rudolstadt: Heidecksburg Palace Overlooking the Saale, Schiller's Early Visits, and the Former Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt Residency in Thueringen
Rudolstadt has about 25,500 inhabitants and lies on the Saale in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district of Thueringen. Heidecksburg, a Baroque palace perched on the hill above the town, was the seat of the Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt principality until 1918. Friedrich Schiller visited Rudolstadt in the 1780s, where he first met Goethe at a social gathering. The annual Tanz-und-Folkfest draws folk music performers from across Europe.
Saalfeld is roughly 10 kilometres south. Jena lies about 35 kilometres north. Bad Blankenburg is nearby. The Saale valley here runs between forested slopes of the Thueringer Schiefergebirge. The Schwarza tributary joins the Saale near the town. Rudolstadt's old town climbs steeply from the river towards the palace.
