Weimar: Goethe and Schiller, Bauhaus Origins, and the Republic That Took a City's Name
Weimar has a population around 65,000 and sits on the Ilm river in Thuringia. The city's cultural weight is wildly disproportionate to its size. Goethe lived here from 1775 until his death in 1832; Schiller joined him in 1799. Their double statue outside the Deutsches Nationaltheater has become one of Germany's most recognisable monuments. The Bauhaus school was founded here in 1919 by Walter Gropius before moving to Dessau. The Weimar Republic, Germany's first democratic state, was proclaimed in the Nationaltheater in 1919 because Berlin was too unstable for the constitutional assembly.
The Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek, with its Rococo hall, survived a devastating fire in 2004 that destroyed 50,000 books. Classical Weimar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Buchenwald memorial, on the Ettersberg hill 8 kilometres north, commemorates the tens of thousands murdered in the Nazi concentration camp. Franz Liszt directed the court orchestra.
