The Basilika St. Martin in Weingarten is one of the largest Baroque churches north of the Alps, its dome visible across the Upper Swabian countryside. The church belongs to the former Benedictine abbey that dominated the town for centuries. Each year on the Friday after Ascension, the Blutritt takes place: a mounted procession of roughly 2,500 riders carrying the Heilig-Blut-Reliquie, a relic said to contain drops of Christ's blood. It is one of the largest equestrian processions in Europe. About 23,800 people live in Weingarten, which sits on a ridge above the Schussen valley in the Ravensburg district of Baden-Wuerttemberg.
Ravensburg is directly to the south, virtually merging with Weingarten. The Bodensee is about 20 kilometres to the south. The Paedagogische Hochschule Weingarten and the Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten give the town a student population. The Altdorf district preserves the name of the medieval settlement that preceded the current town.
